Libra Full Moon: the Space to Become

"Real courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."

I thought of the Libra full moon, and the Sun-Saturn-Neptune conjunction in Aries. The courage Aries represents contains its opposite sign, Libra's empathetic ability: "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

Real courage comes with no promise of success or victory.

The "strength" that does come with guarantees is often a thoughtform, an illusion that we are able to control life. Underneath the mask of power are helplessness, fear and despair, packaged and sold to people who wish to escape emotional pain. The collective's belief in and pursuit of this power-thoughtform becomes a powerful energy that continues to sustain the thoughtform's hold over how we define the rules of "reality".

To face conflicts and opposition in life, you inevitably meet the fear, anger, and wounds of others, and projection from unresolved emotional energies.

Aries correlates to the instinctual desire to separate from the source in order to discover the Self. The desire, instinct, and drive that Aries represents — the movement toward separation — is a necessary phase in the development of individuation.

Before a child is even born, it already carries the hopes and expectations from family and society.

When that hope and expectation is communicated as a blessing — held with ongoing support and nurturing, with space for uncertainty and change — the individual develops a sense of permission to follow instinct, to keep discovering the self, to grow through change. From this ground, one can learn to deal with the anxiety and fear of the unknown, and through interacting with the world and with others, gradually develop a sense of independent self and a mature understanding of their authentic desire.

A sovereign individual can develop the capacity to take responsibility for their own choices, actions, and experiences. From that place, one can meet the "other" in a relationship — recognizing difference, developing understanding, and having space for individuality within relationship dynamics.

To become a mature person: to engage with others, groups, and society in genuinely relational ways. To stabilize one's authentic self within conflict. To keep building emotional and communicational skills in disagreement and even opposition. And to realize the self within complicated societies shaped by shared resources, rules, and limitations.

When the hope and expectation projected on a child is absolute — the child takes on the responsibility to shield the family (and later, all relationships) from their own pain — expected to become a role that never triggers anyone's fear or pain, and to be limited within this role for as long as possible.

The authentic inner self never has the opportunity, permission, or support to explore.

It stays frozen at the infant stage, moving through life wearing a mask shaped by others' expectations.

When the Aries energy remains at the infant stage, the Libra gift of empathy becomes distorted simultaneously. It turns into habitual catering and compromise, getting lost in relationships, others' expectations and projection.

This is true for personal development, nurturing a new plan, making a life-changing decision — and equally true for groups and collective change. Authentic transformation requires the capacity to step into the unknown, to discover, adjust, change, and grow through accumulated experience.

In the process of self-discovery, healing, or authentic change, what we need is space.

Space that can tolerate fear, failure, and uncertainty — for a person to discover their path, to explore, to experience, to become themselves.
